O-SKYER: Making Storage the Footnote of Home Art
At the time, Mr. Zhang Guangyuan, the third-generation successor of Shantou Zhangwu Metal, was working on an order with a Nordic client. The client s comment struck him as unexpected:"Your metalwork is excellent, but why do Chinese household storage tools always seem like intruders?" This remark reminded him of common scenes he 'd encountered during his visits to Chinese homes: a meticulously decorated kitchen where a plastic rice bucket jarred against the European-style cabinets; an elegant living room where tin cans were haphazardly piled on a coffee table, instantly detracting from the space s elegance.
The client then showed him around his own home—where storage tools were unobtrusive, zinc alloy snack boxes blended seamlessly with the texture of the solid wood dining table, and the curves of a metal grain can subtly echoed the plaster lines on the wall. "Storage shouldn t be a necessity to be hidden away, but an integral part of the space." The Nordic people s obsession with home harmony led him to a sudden realization: the pain point of the domestic storage market has never been lack of space, but rather a lack of harmony.
Inspired by this, he re-examined his family s nearly century-long legacy of metalworking. The craftsmanship accumulated from contract manufacturing for overseas brands—from millimeter-level precision in precision stamping to the textured finish of multiple electroplating layers—suddenly gave him a new direction. He decided to break the stereotype ofstorage = utilityand transform metal into something more than just a functional tool.
The team began exploring global home styles, incorporating Nordic minimalist lines into the handle design, embellishing the barrel with French relief, and optimizing the sealing structure with the Japaneseinvisible philosophyof storage. After years of refinement, a rice barrel that blends classic European patterns with the texture of zinc alloy was born. Placed in the kitchen, it s no longer a cold storage container, but a decorative piece that creates a stylish dialogue with cabinets and walls. From its initial focus onpreventing storage from detracting from the aesthetic of a hometo its current mission ofenhancing the style of a space through storage,O-SKYER has always been committed to this international dialogue: leveraging a century of craftsmanship to infuse the aesthetics of various countries into the texture of metal, transforming each storage item into abreathing landscape, freeing Chinese families from the awkward dilemma of choosing between practicality and aesthetics.
This is the O-SKYER story—beginning with an epiphany aboutharmony, fostered by a dedication toprecision craftsmanship + aesthetics, and ultimately, making every encounter between storage and home a symbiosis of art.
